Readers of the Advocate may recognize Luis Cotto's name from our articles on Hartford City Hall. What they may not know is that Cotto is a passionate promoter of the arts, going (at least) back to when he ran an excellent jazz series at La Paloma Sabanera.
First, you should know that Cotto runs a valuable web resource for anyone in central CT. It's a Facebook group called Councilor Cotto's Counsel, and you can join here. Dude has impeccable taste and always sends out interesting and timely event suggestions. In his own words: “This won't be for just cultural events...this will also include political rallies, rentals, and any other miscellaneous thing where someone says ‘Luis, can you send this out to your peoples?’” He’ll key you in to some good music and then some!
And, speaking of impeccable taste: Cotto doesn’t just promote culture around town. He’s trying to create more of it! He’s using Kickstarter (a fundraising website) to try and fund a series called the Center Without Walls. Again, he puts it best:
“The Center Without Walls concept will take advantage of every nook and cranny in the city to present music, poetry, theater, dance, workshops, and just plain ole conversations to areas where mainstream arts organizations do not go. Admission to all of our events will be affordable with a minimum of ‘what you can pay.’”
To give you a taste of the caliber of event Cotto has planned, the first CWW gig will feature Miguel Zenon, who’s, oh, y’know, a MacArthur "Genius" Award recipient. Zenon is presenting the North American debut of his latest project, La Rayuela. Catch more info about the event here.
The catch is that the Center Without Walls has to get pledges to cover all of its funds by August 31st. They’re already about a third of the way there, which is awesome! Throw down a fiver—more if you got it—and turn this wildman loose on local arts programming. Click here to visit Kickstarter and get the Center Without Walls off the ground. You won’t be charged if the CWW doesn’t meet its fundraising goal by the deadline, and all the money stuff is handled by Amazon, so it’s safe. I just slapped my $5 down and the whole process took maybe 3 minutes. Painless!
