Ass-Opiated Press

posted by Alan Bisbort

Another Associated Press reporter comes out of the closet as being in the bag for McCain. This one is called Tom Raum. In his most recent “news” dispatch (this was not contained in a "news analysis" or a "commentary" but in a news article), he looses this lazy assertion:

“Many liberals are belittling the choice, suggesting that as a mother of five children — including an infant with Down syndrome — she has neither the time nor the experience to become vice president.”

The attempt here is to create the illusion that those mean "liberals" are piling on Sarah Palin for her motherhood, and isn't that a sexist, unfair thing to do to a mother of five wee ones?

Any editor at any paper where I’ve ever worked would have struck a giant red pencil through that line and written in the margin “Where are your sources?” “Who are these people doing the ‘suggesting’ and 'belittling'? Give an example of what 'belittling' is being done? Etc.

This seems to be a ploy to turn any warranted criticism of McCain's selection into an attack on MOTHERHOOD ITSELF. And by "LIBERALS!!!!", no less.

Any criticisms of Sarah Palin as a candidate for the second highest office in the nation are warranted, if they based on her past political activities, her ethics in the public arena, her business dealings, her stated beliefs and policies. Anticipating a predictable fusillade of blistering ripostes from the usual gang of trolls on this blog, I will henceforth restrict my comments about Palin to those realms. I regret having even brought up the fact that her unwed teenage daughter is pregnant (though it seems to be a staple of the "non-liberal" press, women's pages, and TV talk shows now to use this as a springboard to discuss how McCain and Palin's policies would restrict sex education to teenagers and the failure of the "abstinence" programs they support).

I wrote Mr. Raum the following letter, partly at the encouragement of the always prescient Atrios:

Mr. Raum,

As a fellow journalist, I have to ask you but one question:

When did the AP become such a disgrace to the profession? Between your bland assertions about “some liberals” and Ron Fournier’s Pravda-like propagandizing for John McCain, the “brand” of AP is taking a serious beating. I won’t go so far as to say that this kind of blatant dishonest and lazy reporting has caused the demise of print journalism, but it has hastened the exodus to alternate news sources.

In the future, before you so blithely launch another fusillade against “some liberals,” you need to 1) define what you mean by “liberals” [Do you mean any and all registered Democrats? People with tattooes? Blacks? what?] and you need to 2) Name the Names. If you are going to cite people, you need to name them.

It’s basic beginning news reporting 101.

Sincerely,

Alan Bisbort

"I regret having even brought up the fact that her unwed teenage daughter is pregnant" Admitting your mistakes is the first step towards recovery.

"As a fellow journalist...." hahahahahahaha. Oh my gosh. Anywho... what the heck are you talking about? Who is questioning whether Sarah "has time?" Well the NY Times for one (link below) and it IS a sexist argument. No one asks if Obama has time to be president while having 2 young children and a working wife. This type of question does not come up for men = hence the sexism. Alan - you and your ilk are like turtles on their backs right now. A change we can believe in? That is not Joe Biden... a long time Washington insider. The McCain / Palin ticket hijacks the "change" platform and they ARE inspiring swing voters. You are rightfully scared and that is why there's a Palin blog every day from you and a billion other left wingers. http://www.nytimes.com/2008/09/02/us/politics/02mother.html?_r=1&hp&oref=slogin By the way.. I'm still waiting for you to backtrack about the AIP and also your inference that Mr. Palin has more than one DUI. A real journalist checks his facts and admits inaccuracies. (I don't anticipate you doing it so don't worry)

Thank you for pointing out how the AP has become a republican tool for McCain with lies and smears against the really intelligent Senator Obama, and very qualified presidential candidate. Senator Obama has great judgment, skills getting things done right, and is so much more professional than McCain or his impulsive risky pick for VP.

Vicki - Can you name a single thing that Obama has "gotten done" right or wrong? One thing.

I refuse to believe Vicki is a real person.

Joe, you are skating on thin ice, on this blog. This is your final warning. If you continue to harass any more of my guests, you will be barred from visiting this blog. I've already barred the guy who was harassing you, and deleted all of his followup postings. If you want to ask Vicki a question or comment on what she said, that's fine. And she, or any other guest here, can decide not to respond, if they choose. I will not have my guests intimidated or browbeaten by you. Got me? Any "attitude" in response to this message will also be grounds to terminate your presence here.

Alan, You should be terminated from the Advocate for stating that the republican party supports pedophelia. That's by far the most offensive thing I've read here. That being said, feel free to ban me and further prove your aversion to logical debate. I'm guess it will just get worse after Palin had a good performance last night.

You're missing the point, Joe. You are not a victim. You have violated the rules of this blog. Goodbye.
Posted by bisbort on 9.4.08 at 4.14
Alan, Where can readers find the rules for your blog? Or is there just one rule; to agree with you? Again, I have to say that if that is the case, my suggestion would be to not allow any comments. But that would get the question of why you believe you have a right to espouse your views in a public forum yet others have not right to question them.

If you strike this post down, I will become more powerful than you can imagine.

OK, Joe, I've relented. You made me realize I was acting too much like a Republican shill, or Rush Limbaugh and OReilly (who screen their calls and guests to avoid having to face dissenting opinions). I don't mind dissenting opinions, despite what you have said about me. Plus, y our Obi-Wan Kenobi thing was pretty funny.

saw that one coming. For the record, I have never posted under an alternate name and will not do so. While we are playing nice, can you please confirm that you don't believe republicans support pedophelia?

I went back and reread my column and I don't see that I did what you are implying. My point was that because the Republicans did not run a viable candidate against Lieberman in 2000, they deserve to reap the whirlwind of whomever they allow to represent their brand. And the Republican candidate in 2000 was Phil Giordano, the mayor of Waterbury who was, even then, being probed by the FBI for corruption (that's how they discovered he was shagging little girls in his city office!). Even then, they did not know how to "vet" their candidates.
