BEST AFTERNOON DRIVE-TIME RADIO SHOW

Colin McEnroe writes the blog To Wit and a column for the Hartford Courant.

Colin McEnroe

After hosting an afternoon talk show on WTIC for 16 years, political commentator and humorist Colin McEnroe lost his job in December, 2008. He was a rare thing in the AM landscape: a liberal. Even after a decade of programming, most politically left-of-center people didn't even know his program existed, McEnroe claimed in his weekly Courant column four days after the final show. "The problem was that these people literally did not believe that amplitude modulation broadcasting could be received in their cars," he wrote. So, now what's he been up to? In addition to blogging (a blog awarded best by our readers) and his Courant column, McEnroe freelances (he'll have a Men's Health piece about how getting laid off can be a good thing), he's traveling to Japan in May to speak on the future of online journalism and he's teaching a fall course at Trinity College called "McLuhan 5.0" (as in Marshall McLuhan, the communications theorist -- one of the topics of study will be Facebook). McEnroe's enjoying the relaxed schedule -- "the idea that I don't have anything pressing to do doesn't bother me right now" -- but he says that "there are days when I'm dying to get on the air."
