Cindy and Gary Wood know Hartford inside and out. When the couple started selling hot dogs in vending carts 32 years ago, they were among the first entrepreneurs to take their food to the streets, selling downtown, near Bushnell Park, across from the Y and at other scenic spots. "We were the first vendor at the Old State House," says Gary. They were also the first to bring suped-up specialty hot dogs to the area, adding cheese, chili, and other unusual toppings to the humble dog. Over the years they've served all of the state's notable hot dog varieties -- Grote and Weigel, Hummel and Bogner. And the assortment of specialty dogs evolved into a "posse," according to Gary. Eventually the couple set up shop downtown, at the corner of Pratt and Main streets. Even without clear street visibility, they've been able develop a loyal, one might even say fanatical, following of regulars. "Our customers are great," says Cindy. ""We're so thankful to our loyal customers. Our people have been there for us. And we've tried to be there for them." Adds Gary, "You can get anybody to come into your business the first time, the challenge is getting them to come back. And that's where we're a success."
